Do You Even Know How To Breathe?
Breathing Techniques used by Top Athletes, Navy SEAL, and Monks
TheBroCode Rule #3: If your bro needs a wingman, always step up to the plate. A a real bro always shows up for duty.
What’s up Kings 👑, Let's dive right into the elite breath work used by top athletes like Kobe, Navy SEALs, and Monks. Then it's time us to take a look at the handshakes between bros. We’ve all seen them before, it’s a ritual amongst men. I’ll break it down.
Use Diaphragmatic breathing for both - These are best for anxiety and relaxation
Breathing Techniques
Breathing. Sounds simple as fuck right? In. Out. In. Out. What idiot doesn’t know how to breath right? WRONG! Your basic-ass shallow breathing habits are not doing you any good. Learning HOW to breathe could be the key that opens up a pathways and new mental states that gets you into prime condition. Don’t believe me? Just try it. It’s the same shit guys like Lebron, Kobe, and Brady have been doin’ to play at elite levels.
Tactical Breathing: This is Navy SEAL style. The ‘shits-about-to-hit the-fan breathing. It’s a 4×4 technique. Inhale 4 seconds. Exhales 4 second. Do it 4 Times.
Rhythmic Breathing: Runners Heaven. Ever find yourself gasping for air when you run? like a fish out of water? It’s because you’re fucking breathing wrong bro. Let’s fix that. You need to focus on syncing your breathing with your steps. This creates an optimized oxygen intake. It goes like this: Start with a 2:2 pattern. Inhale for 2 steps, exhale for 2 steps. As you pass the beginner phase, shift to a 3:3 pattern, then to a 4:4 pattern and keep increasing it for difficulty. In no time, you’ll be breathing like Donovan Bailey.
Diaphragmatic Breathing: The Belly Breather. When you breathe, does your chest puff out like superman or does your belly push out like you ate a buffet? If you’re chest is puffing, you’re doing it wrong.
Active Recovery Breathing: Recharge Batteries. This breath work is idea for active recovery by top athletes and SEALs. This is the one in the diagram above. The 4-7-8 breathing technique (see diagram). This is one of the best styles that also uses diaphragmatic breathing to calm your mind and let go of stress and anxiety in the body.
Mindful Breathing: The Secret to Zen. This is rooted in mindfulness, which just means you need to focus ALL your attention your breath. That means pay attention to how it feels to breathe in and out, how your body reacts, swallow oxygen. This is what athletes use before, during, and after games. It helps increase focus and reduce anxiety.
Wim Hof Breathing: *The Kobe Method”. Win Hof is the Iceman. He ran a marathon without fuckin’ shoes in the Artic snow and climbed MT. Kilimanjaro wearing fuckin’ shorts. Crazy right? He also stood bare foot for 112 minutes on ice. All based on this breathing technique.
The Wim Hof Breathing requires you to inhale deeply through your nose and exhale rapidly and freely via your mouth. Repeat that shit 30-50 times in powerful burst until you feel light headed like you just smoked a cigarette or cigar. (It’s called Wim Hof but I call it the the Kobe Method
People have been known to 2x the number of pushups by just using this breathing method. It helps improve focus, concentration, reduce stress and unlock energy.
It doesn’t end here. If you wanna learn how real Shaolin Monks breathe there is great article here on Dantian breathing. This has to be one of the most elite but also most complicated. Dantian is similar to Chakras and based on energy and life force. Maybe I’ll do another one just on that, because it goes so deep. Helps you unfuck your brain though, and get your life force in order, for everyone that’s goin’ through shit.
This may sound like some hocus pocus stuff, but the fact is, it works. That’s why all the elites do it and use it. So its already proven.
Mindfulness of breathing helps to rebuild your brain cells and calm your mind
Check out these videos from Master Shi Heng YI - A 35th Gen Shaolin Master. He is also the headmaster of the Shaolin Temple Europe in Germany. His wisdom is next insanely useful and I recommend you look him up and watch some his video.
The Art of the Handshake And It’s Purpose Between Bros
We’ve seen them all before. In movies, at frat parties, you see them all over sports, the infamous overly-complicated-for-no-reason handshakes and daps*. Secret handshakes are a form of bonding that show respect, loyalty, and trust within men. It’s a masculinity thing, not too mention, its just cool as fuck, right?
Between men, it signals “you’re my bro, this belongs to us, I love you” in a way that resonates a lot easier than tapping into a bunch of emotions. (WTF are emotions by the way? Why do we have them? we’ll break that down next week as it’s the 101 of self awareness).
It also releases dopamine, which triggers happiness in the brain. It’s something that all men should have, not just for sports but to signify a brotherhood.
When I was living in Medellin, Colombia I had met a fellow crypto bro, Juan, from Miami through mutual friends. We became really close, and as a couple of crypto bros in Medellin, we had formed a little brotherhood and even had our own crypto bro handshake that was pretty f*ckin cool to be honest. Every time we met up at the house, or met at the clubs or restaurants we would do the ‘crypto gang’ handshake and people would look at us funny hahaha…but for us it was comradery, it was a sign of friendship, of brotherhood, of trust, of loyalty. A representation of uniqueness.
I challenge all of you, the next time to see your friend, your brother, your cousin, your dad, your son, whoever it is you vibe with the most in life, create a cool secret handshake to signify your bond. (if you’re a girl dad, you gotta see steph curry and his daughters secret handshake below, love it!)
There’s a lot of things we can learn from sports, and from the good old days of the ‘80s and ‘90s when it comes to doing little things for your mental health…secret handshakes will always be one of them.
A sense of belonging, a sense of being a part of something, a sense of love between bros, a feeling of joy.
(fun fact of the day)
* Dap stands for Dignity And Pride. So next time you dap someone with a fist bumps, elbows, secret handshakes, remember what it means.
